Sedation dentistry

You Don't Have to White-Knuckle It

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your stomach drop, you're not alone — and you're not being dramatic. Dental anxiety is real, it's common, and it keeps a lot of people away from care they genuinely need. At Cornerstone Family Dental, we don't just acknowledge that. We've built our entire approach around it.

Sedation dentistry isn't something we offer as an afterthought. It's a meaningful part of how we serve patients who have been avoiding the dentist for years — sometimes decades — because previous experiences were painful, rushed, or just plain frightening. Whether your anxiety is mild or severe, whether you need a routine cleaning or something more involved, there's an option that can make this manageable for you.

Here's what we want you to know before anything else: you are in control. Nothing happens without your understanding and your consent. We'll explain what we're going to do before we do it, and if you need to stop, you stop. Sedation is one tool in that system — it helps quiet the part of your nervous system that's been running the show, so the part of you that actually wants to take care of your teeth gets a chance.

We offer three levels of sedation — nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation — to match your comfort level and the complexity of your visit. Our team will talk through each option with you honestly, help you understand what to expect, and make sure the choice feels right before anything is scheduled. No pressure. No upselling. Just a real conversation about what would make this easier for you.

Safety, Monitoring, and Training

Sedation is only as good as the team administering it. At Cornerstone Family Dental, both Dr. Dosch and Dr. Pittman have received training specific to sedation dentistry, and our team follows strict monitoring protocols throughout every sedated visit. Your oxygen levels, heart rate, and blood pressure are tracked continuously — because your comfort and your safety aren't separate priorities, they're the same one.

We also take a full health history before recommending any sedation option. Things like current medications, underlying conditions, and past reactions all factor into what we suggest. This isn't a formality — it's how we make sure the plan we put together is right for you, not just right in general.

If you have questions about any of this — what the monitoring looks like, what training our doctors have completed, what to expect when you arrive — ask us. We'd rather you walk in informed than reassured by vague promises.

We've Helped a Lot of People Come Back.

Wherever you're starting from, we'll meet you there.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the lightest level of sedation we offer, and for many patients with mild to moderate anxiety, it's exactly enough. You breathe it in through a small mask that rests over your nose, and within a few minutes you'll feel a sense of calm — relaxed, a little floaty, but fully awake and able to communicate with us throughout the visit.

One of the things patients appreciate most about nitrous is how quickly it wears off. We gradually replace it with oxygen at the end of your appointment, and most people feel completely back to normal within a few minutes — meaning you can drive yourself home and go about your day.

If you're new to sedation, or if your anxiety tends to show up as tension and dread rather than full-on panic, nitrous oxide is often a great place to start. It takes the edge off without taking you out of the room, and it gives us a chance to build some trust together in a way that might make future visits easier, with or without it.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a step up from nitrous — it involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment, so that by the time you arrive, your anxiety has already been significantly reduced. You'll be awake and able to respond to questions, but you'll feel deeply relaxed, and many patients have little to no memory of the visit afterward.

This option works well for patients with moderate to significant anxiety, or for longer appointments where staying calm for an extended period of time would be difficult otherwise. Because the medication takes time to take effect, we'll give you clear instructions about when to take it and what to avoid beforehand.

Important: you will need a driver. Oral sedation lingers in your system for several hours after the appointment, so you won't be able to drive yourself home or handle anything that requires sharp focus for the rest of the day. Plan to rest. It's a good excuse to take the afternoon off.

We'll review your health history and current medications before prescribing anything — oral sedation isn't one-size-fits-all, and we want to make sure whatever we recommend is a safe fit for you specifically.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is our deepest level of sedation, and it's the right choice for patients with severe dental anxiety, complex treatment needs, or a strong gag reflex that makes even routine care feel impossible. Medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream, which means the effects are felt almost immediately and can be precisely adjusted throughout the appointment.

You won't be fully unconscious — this isn't general anesthesia — but you'll be in a deeply relaxed, semi-aware state. Most patients have no memory of the procedure at all. For someone who has spent years dreading the dentist, that can be genuinely life-changing.

IV sedation also allows us to accomplish more in a single visit, which means fewer appointments overall for patients who need significant restorative work. For someone who has been putting off care for a long time, that's often a meaningful benefit.

As with oral sedation, you'll need a driver, and we'll do a thorough review of your health history beforehand. This option requires a separate consultation so we can make sure it's the right fit and answer every question you have before the day of your appointment.

The Show-Tell-Do Approach

Sedation isn't the only way we help anxious patients — and for some people, it's not even the first step. Before we ever recommend a sedation option, we start with something simpler: we tell you what's going to happen before it happens.

The show-tell-do approach means we never reach into your mouth without explaining what we're about to do first. We show you the instrument, describe the sensation, and only then proceed — and only if you're ready. It sounds straightforward, but for patients who have experienced dental visits that felt out of their control, it can change everything.

This approach works hand in hand with sedation. Some patients find that once they understand what to expect, their anxiety becomes manageable on its own. Others use both — the structure of show-tell-do alongside nitrous or oral sedation — because the combination gives them two layers of control instead of one.

You're also welcome to bring headphones, a blanket, or a support person. None of this is unusual here. We want the environment to feel as safe as possible, because when you feel safe, we can actually do our best work together. Your comfort isn't a courtesy — it's part of the care.
